Maurice James

Maurice James has many years experience in the aviation industry having
previously held various senior positions managing teams of project managers and
engineers. He specialises in system safety analysis, engine and powerplant
design and development, flight test engineering and project management. He
has a wide understanding of the safety analysis process in the context of
aircraft design. Since joining R.G.W. Cherry & Associates, Maurice has
worked on a wide range of system safety projects and benefit analyses. He
is an experienced lecturer and carries out the tutorials on the Cranfield
University Safety Assessment of Aircraft Systems five day Course. Maurice
is the co-presenter of the company's Applied Safety Assessment course. He
also lectures on Pilot Studies at the University of Hertfordshire.
Together with Ray Cherry and Cranfield University, Maurice has co-presented
system safety assessment courses to many organisations worldwide.
Maurice is a Chartered Engineer, a Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society and
holds a Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Durham. He
is a holder of a Commercial Pilots Licence with an Instructors Rating and flies
regularly, presently instructing at Stapleford Flight Centre in the U.K.
Nick Povey

Nick is a qualified and highly experienced aeronautical engineer with extensive experience in all aspects of safety, data and IT management. He has managed several teams both in the safety regulatory environment and in a commercial aviation business. Nick has a proven track record in innovation and meeting tight and taxing objectives. He is experienced in working in an international environment with personnel from widely different organisations and cultural backgrounds. Nick has extensive experience in safety and benefit analysis, including crash survivability, fire safety and explosion hardening. He has a strong knowledge of all aspects of data collection and management related to aviation safety and is highly experienced in web applications, e-business and electronic publishing. In addition, Nick has practical experience of procurement and supplier management including tendering, performance assessment and commercial negotiations.
Since 1988, Nick has held various senior positions with the UK Civil Aviation Authority. Initially working as an Airworthiness Surveyor and then Research Project Manager, specialising in aircraft fire and explosion safety, with extensive collaboration with other National Aviation Authorities, Nick was then invited to join the CAA Corporate Senior Management Group, as Head of Information Management. Most recently his role has been as e-Business Team Manager, involving the detailed design of new regulatory business processes and their data needs - specifically Risk Based Resource Allocation and Safety Management Systems.
Nick holds a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He is PRINCE 2 project management trained and has attended the Henley Management School.
Nick is regularly asked to present papers at conferences on safety and information management topics.
Nick Butcher

Since 1973 Nick has held various senior positions at the UK Civil Aviation Authority, joining Flight Crew Licensing and subsequently transferring to the Flight Operations Inspectorate where he commenced his involvement in Operational Cabin Safety issues. Nick was a founder member of the SRG Cabin Safety Working Group (established immediately after the 1985 Manchester accident), and was responsible for amending UK cabin crew and flight crew training requirements in CAP (Civil Aviation Publication) Number 360, including fire fighting training. Many of these requirements subsequently made their way into JAR-OPS and into European Law, i.e. EU OPS. Nick was appointed as Head of the UK CAA Flight Operations Cabin Safety Office in 1990, and was responsible for developing it into a working unit, conducting ongoing inspections and audits of both UK AOC holders and foreign operators.
Nick has been closely involved in numerous research projects for the UK Civil Aviation Authority, including but not limited to:
- Access to and evacuation through Type III exits
- Access through bulkheads
- Cabin water spray systems
- Evacuation with cabin water mist systems
- Exit acoustic signals
- Improvements to Type III exit hatch design
- Cabin crew actions in evacuations through Type I exits
- Passenger brace position
- Infant restraint
- Lithium battery fires
Nick has been involved in many major aircraft accident and incident investigations, being responsible for follow-up actions in respect of survival factors and in particular flight deck security following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Nick has also been involved with aircraft certification issues, mainly in respect of emergency evacuation, for over 20 years and has chaired or served on many high-profile cabin safety and flight operations working groups. Nick was Chairman of the EASA Joint Operations Evaluation Board - Cabin Crew Sub-group, for the Airbus A380.
In conjunction with R.G.W. Cherry & Associates Limited, Nick worked on a major in-depth review of cabin crew fire training on behalf of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, published in 2009.
